Hallo Marcel,

Hoewel ik nu een Scoop.it ZuydBibliotheek2.0 heb aangemaakt zal ik zo nu en dan toch even een extra woordje wijden aan een artikel dat ik gelezen heb over de toekomst van de bibliotheek. Ik kan het toch niet laten 😉 Het visierapport is een beschrijving geworden van een realistische toekomstvisie voor Zuyd Bibliotheek rekening houdend met alle omgevingsfactoren die er zijn. Ik schets toch ook graag mijn gedroomde toekomst voor Zuyd Bibliotheek. 🙂

In Library Journal is recentelijk veel aandacht voor het Online Event The Digital Shift: Reinventing Libraries op 16 oktober a.s. In het tijdschrift worden daarom toekomstbeelden door visionairs uit de bibliotheekwereld gepubliceerd. Zo las ik Practicing Freedom in the Digital Library van Barbara Fister.

Volgens Fister zou het in de bibliotheek over meer moeten gaan dan alleen om toegang tot content en het helpen van studenten met zoeken naar informatiebronnen.

That’s a problem. We librarians have tried to integrate what we have to offer into the learning going on in the classroom and, ideally, the entire curriculum, in the belief that these skills will be useful in life after college. Yet we have little room to do more than assist students in completing assignments. We may be neglecting an important kind of learning that critically examines how knowledge is made and shared.

Het gaat om studenten, medewerkers, onderzoekers te laten ervaren hoe informatie verzamelen en kennis delen echt werkt.

Our teaching practices should present libraries as more than the Bank of Sources, from which usable phrases can be withdrawn as needed. They should be workshops, labs, studios, or hacker spaces, where students engage with ideas and invent their own, through conversation with others interested in the same things. They should be places where students develop their own identities as they learn the critical habits that civil society requires.

Als het gaat om ‘digital shift’ in bibliotheken gaat het wat betreft Barbara Fister om onderstaande punten. Ik ben het zo met haar eens.

• It’s not about technology. It’s about making meaning.
• It’s not about finding sources. It’s about building understanding.
• It’s not about skills. It’s about identity and relationships.
• It’s not about individual success. It’s about participating in a society that values justice.
• It’s not about finding and using information. It’s about the practice of freedom.

Dat betekent voor bibliotheekmedewerkers het gesprek aangaan en een Social Librarian willen zijn/worden.

Dit weekend is het teamleiderschap van Zuyd Bibliotheek veranderd. Chris Kuijpers heeft het stokje overgedragen aan Jack Pleumeekers. En Jack heeft er zin in, lees zijn blog maar! Hij gaat samen met de bibliotheekcollega’s aan de slag met het visietraject Zuyd Bibliotheek. Mijn rol zal een andere worden dan het afgelopen half jaar, maar ik zal zeker aandacht bliijven vragen voor een Social Library want daar ligt wat mij betreft de (zeer nabije) toekomst.
